Everybody has a part to play

Our second sunny week in Pabre was of much success and forward planning. At the beginning of the week, we had a breakdown of our budget accompanied by the programme officer and manager (Omar and Jean Pascal). On Tuesday, sunny Pabre was no more as we were graced with a heavy storm, to which you have never seen leading to moments of hysteria and epiphany for the Brits who were very excited and grateful to see some rain. The day was also filled with survey preparations and a visit to the local college, Lycee Municpal. After introducing ourselves to the Principal of the school, we then presented ourselves to a few classrooms and provided a bit of news about the English and IT classes. To finish the day Vicki and Hamadou drew up a finalised version of the calendar whilst other team members went off in the search for more schools we could potentially perform awareness raising sessions in.

Halfway through the week it was in fact the Team Leaders, Marc and Nouho, time to shine with a presentation on how to do an awareness raising session. As a group, we really benefited from this session because we debated any differences between Burkina Faso and the UK. Giselle and Frankie finished the survey after a group discussion to work out what information the group felt needed adding in or updating. Rebecca and Rabi also managed to finish yet another Facebook post whilst Alisane and Toni wrote up a health and safety plan for the building of the basketball court.

On Thursday morning, the official office job roles were handed out. Gisele and Frankie were given the roles of Awareness Raising and Sports Officers, Hamadou and Vicki were given English as a Second Language Officers (ESL), Alasane and Antonia were tasked with Building Officers and Rabi and Rebecca were given the roles of IT and Social Media Officers. Once the team knew their main focus, all 4 groups began to work on their specific tasks such as risk assessments, planning lessons and awareness raising Facebook campaigns.

Friday morning took the team into a breezy clearing in the trees overlooking the reservoir for our first team group reflection. Hamadou and Vicki took the lead and the team engaged in an interesting discussion surrounding the ‘ICS & you’ chapter of the ICS handbook.

We discussed learning styles, what we want to gain from our experience and our expectations to give us more of an understanding of each other. The rest of the day was spent planning our Handibasket court building challenge with Antonia and Alasane meeting with a local builder to talk strategy and costing.

The end of week 2 left the team feeling more prepared, engaged and enthusiastic with high hopes for what the remaining 9 weeks in Pabre had in store for them!
